Young women learn and practice hairdressing techniques at “The Doll Experience”

HEARNE, Texas (KBTX) — An award-winning hairstylist hosted an event that brought together young women from across Texas to learn the art of styling their hair.

Latonya Darnell says when she had The Doll Experience last year only 11 girls showed up, this year the number of attendees more than doubled. She wanted to give these women opportunities that she didn’t have when she was a rising designer.

“I wish I had something like that growing up,” Darnell says. It would have made me feel more advanced to go to beauty school.

In addition to learning hairstyles, the girls learned communication skills and health and sanitation practices.

Janiyah Jefferson attended camp today and wants to become a stylist when she’s older. She says she is very lucky that someone wants to invest in her future.

“It’s important to me to know that someone still cares to help and motivate us, and show us what we’re capable of in the future,” says Jefferson.

Donell not only wanted to organize this event for young women, but also for the town of Hearne. She really wanted to shine a light on all the good things coming out of town.

“Doing something positive for my city is a plus. In Hearne, there really isn’t a whole lot going on during the summer. For young women sitting at home bored, I feel like they’re having fun today and enjoying every moment of it,” Darnell says.

The Doll Experience is something Darnell hopes to host every year. You can find information about her hair salon “Styling Studio” here.
