Paramount+ orders British thriller ‘The Doll Factory’

Simon and Schuster

Paramount+, the streamer with the most extensive growing list of UK Originals outside of Netflix’s already established UK brand, has added another title to the lineup. The doll factory is an adaptation of the best-selling debut novel of the same name by Elizabeth Macneal. The story is a dark Victorian thriller centered on a doll painter, Iris, and her twin sister, Rose, and the obsession that arises when one tries to break free from the other.

The planned six-part limited series comes from indie producer Buccaneer Media, which UK fans will know from other series such as marcella and whistling pearl. This is the production studio’s second series to go into production for Paramount+; the first order, The hot girlswas announced in April 2022. It’s also a suspenseful mystery series, though it centers in the present day on a vicar who uncovers the hidden secrets of a town.

Macneal praised the scripts she’s seen so far, from debut screenwriter Charley Miles. “It’s the most surreal and wonderful thing that my novel has become a television series,” said Elizabeth Macneal. “When I wrote the book, I felt I knew each character intimately – and what a pleasure it will be to see them fully brought to life, from the fire and zest of Iris to being a painter to taxidermist Silas’s thirst for making recognize his name.”

Here is the synopsis of the series:

Iris paints dolls for a living alongside her twin sister, Rose, and dreams of becoming an artist and the night secretly paints herself naked. Silas is a taxidermist who has a shop filled with his creations. He dreams of one day finding an object so unique that he will be propelled to glory. Louis is a painter and member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, looking for his next muse. When Iris meets Silas, then Louis, she is offered the opportunity to escape and start a new life. To do this, she must abandon her sister, sacrifice her reputation and venture into the unknown. But as the world of Iris expands, a story of dark obsession begins to unfold.

The series has just been ordered, so there is no casting yet. Neither The doll factory neither The hot girls still have release dates but aren’t expected until at least mid-2023, if not later.
