Congratulations to Laverne Cox as it was recently announced that she is the last person to be honored with her very own Barbie doll!
According to a press release sent to The rootthe announcement was made on Wednesday, and comes just before the Orange is the new black 50th birthday of the star. As part of Barbie’s commitment to increasing the diversity of collections, the company created this Cox doll for the brand’s Tribute collection to celebrate the impact she has had as an advocate. LGBTQ rights. In addition to the doll, Barbie has also pledged to make a donation in her name to TransFamilySOSa non-profit organization dedicated to creating a more open and gender-aware community.
“I’ve dreamed of working with Barbie to create my own doll for years,” Cox said in a statement. “I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on the shelves and have the opportunity to add a transgender-inspired Barbie doll to their collection.. During an appearance on the Today’s show on Wednesday, she later added:
“I think this year, when over 250 pieces of anti-transgender legislation have been introduced, legislatures across the country [are] targeting transgender children, LGBTQ youth – I hope all children who feel stigmatized, when their health care is threatened, their ability to play sports, I hope they can see this Barbie and have a feeling of hope and possibility. I hope they see themselves in this Barbie. I hope they know they can create spaces where they see themselves and are represented because representation matters.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate actress, producer, writer and LGBTQ+ rights pioneer Laverne Cox with a doll,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, Mattel. “We are proud to highlight the importance of inclusion and acceptance at any age and to recognize Laverne’s significant impact on culture with a Barbie Tribute Collection.”
