Who designed the Briar Rose doll?
The Briar Rose doll was designed by Ricard Chan, a Shanghai-based fashion designer for Disney’s product development team. Born in Taiwan, Chan, at a very young age, moved with his family to South Africa where he grew up. He then went to Central Saint Martins art school in London, where he graduated with a degree in fashion design. Prior to being a Disney employee, Chan worked in Paris, which inspired his creative philosophy to challenge norms in innovative ways.
Chan’s earliest memory of Disney dates back to when his parents brought home a VHS tape of Sleeping Beauty. He was just 6 at the time, but he remembers being captivated by the film’s gothic-inspired story and design. Aurora’s story of being born in one place and being taken to another life away from home resonated with Chan’s own life of moving to another country at a young age.
When given the chance to work on a dress for Aurora as Briar Rose, Chan interpreted the look as if the character had designed the dress herself, guided by her own tastes and worldview. Since Briar Rose is a forest maiden, Chan imagined that nature would inspire her design. As a result, the doll’s dress is inspired by the subtle tones of flowers, embellished with petal-shaped embroidery, creating an elegant ensemble.
