A famous Barbie doll photographer is looking to reveal the “secrets” of her craft with the release of a stunning new “how to” book.
Izabela Kwella from Gdańsk came up with the idea after being inundated with questions from her legion of fans about how she made the dolls look so realistic.
An architect by profession, the 36-year-old who has more than 100,000 Instagram followers and a string of exhibitions to her name said the idea came about when she was putting together her portfolio for print.
Titled “Doll Photography: Demystifying the Art of Doll Photography,” the 52-page hardcover book is packed with brilliant photos and professional insider tips.
One showing a behind-the-scenes shot with the final image explains how to achieve realistic lighting as well as the camera settings used.
Another showing a Barbie ‘mermaid’ reveals how to make the most of outdoor natural light.
In addition to lighting techniques, equipment, and post-production, the book also shows budding doll snappers how to pose the dolls so they look natural and how to give the impression of movement. .
Kwella said, “After self-taught and developing my style of doll photography, I started sharing ‘behind the scenes’ content with my audience. It has become my hallmark – sharing my knowledge and experience.
“Inspiring and challenging other artists has become my biggest goal when it comes to doll photography.
“This book is about everything. It shows my art, demystifies the behind the scenes of doll photography, answers your questions, and inspires you to try.
She added that the book is aimed at both traditional photographers and those who use their phone camera.
In November, Kwella will have an exhibition in Gdańsk before traveling to Belgium in June to give a talk about her craft.
She told TFN: “I think that’s my next goal: to share my knowledge and infect people with my passion.”
Kwella’s book is currently on Kickstarter where she is currently 5,000 PLN short of her goal of 40,420 PLN and is supported by doll fashion designers and paper artists.
